From early April to late October Wilmington visitors can enjoy a visit to one of the oldest peanut plantations in the country with an easy drive to the Poplar Grove Plantation. Located just north of the center of Wilmington along US Highway 17, this semi-remote site is a picturesque and perfectly maintained example of antebellum architecture at its most charming.
Visitors to Poplar Grove Plantation can sign up for a full tour of the estate, which includes the 1850 manor house, the farm-oriented outbuildings that are stocked with domesticated animals, (like chickens and roosters), and the picnic and playground areas where the kids can run around and have fun. There’s also a host of seasonal and interest-specific tours available, including a spooky evening ghost tour, and the wide open space can even be rented for stunning wedding ceremonies, receptions, and other special events. Poplar Grove Plantation is also home to a summertime weekly farmer’s market, which is popular with locals and visitors alike, as well as an annual plant sale which is typically held in March or April, and which attracts gardening experts from all across the Cape Fear region. A unique site that’s scenic, historic, and popular with visitors of multiple interests, the Poplar Grove Plantation is a great destination to soak up the local history and culture of the Cape Fear area.
