Folks Café

Folks Café is a sweet little coffee shop that’s found on the outskirts of Downtown Wilmington in an unimposing, (and very easy to pass by), one-story brick “home” in a cluster of small downtown homes. Though the outside might not look like much to write home about, the interior is warm and cozy, and patrons will be treated to a wonderfully wide variety of coffee drinks, as well as an assortment of sandwiches, vegetarian specialties, and even empanadas to tide over an appetite in between Downtown Wilmington visits.

Though the outside may look like an everyday brick house, the inside is warm and inviting, with a cluster of tables and booths, and a central counter for ordering coffee, ice cream, and other goodies. Coffee fans will want to take a look at the chalkboard menu to choose a drink, while hungry patrons can dive into a hearty sandwich like the Argentinean “El Mixto” with Swiss cheese and lean ham that’s pressed in the panini grill, or the “Chicken Wannabe” which boasts the Folk’s egg salad (with choice of olives or raisins) on ciabatta bread. Suitable for coffee lovers, vegetarians, and everything in between, Folks Café is a diamond in the rough for coffee house fans who don’t mind straying from the central heart of Downtown Wilmington.

Southport - Fort Fisher Ferry

Visitors to historic Southport who want to make a beach escape, or Carolina Beach travelers who need an easy yet scenic route to head south will find the Southport / Fort Fisher ferry a convenient yet completely unique way to explore the southern North Carolina coastline. Though just a short 35 minute ride from the mainland to Pleasure Island, (the home of Fort Fisher State Park, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach), this ferry trip nonetheless gives its passengers exceptional views of the Cape Fear River, and an incredible story to take back home.

Fort Anderson - Old Brunswick Town

Fort Anderson, also known as Brunswick Town, is the historic site of the first permanent settlement in the Cape Fear area. Established nearly 300 years ago in 1726, and destroyed just a few decades later by British Soldiers during the start of the Revolutionary War in 1776, visitors can still explore the ancient ruins of this long-gone civilization and enjoy a glimpse into the area’s centuries-deep roots.
